Armstrong captures win in Switzerland, Neben third in Italy

Colorado Springs, Colo. (May 6, 2007)—The United States Women’s National Team turned in two podium performances on Sunday as Kristin Armstrong (Boise, Idaho/Team Lipton) won the Souvenir Magali Pache Lausanne, a 20.4-kilometer time trial event in Switzerland, and Amber Neben (Irvine, Calif./Flexpoint) closed out the three-day Giro di San Marino with a third-place overall finish.
In Switzerland, some of the world’s top female time trialists gathered for one of the most prestigious single-day races on the calendar where Armstrong placed first ahead of Christine Soeder of Austria and Karen Thurig of Switzerland. American Christine Thorburn (Menlo Park, Calif./Webcor) placed seventh.
At the Giro di San Marino, Neben began the weekend with a third-place finish in Friday’s four-kilometer prologue behind Marianne Vos (NED) and Edita Pucinskaite (LTU). In Saturday’s stage two, an 87-kilometer road race in nearby Borgo Maggiore, Vos again took the stage win in a field sprint finish while Neben placed 24th with the same finishing time. On Sunday, Vos scored the hat trick with her third consecutive stage win in the 100-kilometer stage in Serravalle, while Neben placed 11th to secure her spot on the overall podium.
With the majority of the time gaps coming from the short opening prologue, Neben finished third overall, 10 seconds off the pace of Vos, while Pucinskaite claimed second place, nine seconds back.
Other American performances at the Giro di San Marino included Meredith Miller (Fort Collins, Colo./Team Lipton) in 23rd place, 1:29 off the pace and Kristin LaSasso (La Canada, Calif./Team Lipton) in 24th place, also 1:29 back. Alison Powers (Boulder, Colo./Colavita-Sutter Home-Cooking Light) placed 45th, Katheryn Curi (Mountain View, Calif./Webcor) finished 49th, Brooke Miller (Los Altos, Calif./Team Tibco) placed 54th, Brenda Lyons (Santa Rosa, Calif./Team Lipton) placed 71st and Lara Kroepsch (Newbury Park, Calif./Team Lipton) placed 72nd.
