Australian Bowls-Murphy chases unique double

Australian vice-captain Karen Murphy has enjoyed stellar run at the National Champion of Champions in Queanbeyan today, remaining undefeated in both the singles and pairs and within reach of a unique double.

With the winner earning the right pull on the green and gold at the 2013 World Champion of Champions in New Zealand, the 37-year-old is now within striking distance of one of the few titles that has managed to elude the 412 international game veteran.

Murphy, the upcoming World Championships Jackaroos singles representative, walked away from a nail-bitter finish against Western Australia's Noelene Abe in her second singles match for the day, leading by as many as 9 shots at the mid-way point of the match before taking her foot off the pedal.

Abe's response saw her lock the lead twice at crucial points of the match, 17-17 and then 18-all, but unable to withstand Murphy's constant peppering of the jack.

With victories at a premium at the cut-throat competition, Murphy looms as the apparent heir to the throne, but will need to overcome two further challenges, in tomorrow's last singles rubber and then Sunday's final, in order to hoist her maiden National Champion of Champions silverware aloft.

Murphy has one leg firmly placed in the final, but will be pitted against Queensland sharpshooter Sue Brady in her final encounter tomorrow afternoon, with Brady still capable of leap frogging Murphy and topping the group, provided she can produce a comfortable victory.

In the other half of the draw, Aussie Jackaroos Rebecca Quail bounced back from her morning loss to record a 21-9 win against national squad teammate Carla Odgers.

Quail now headlines her section, but can still be overthrown for a place in Sunday's final by 2010 champion Riina Bradbrook, from South Australia, if Bradbrook can overcome Odgers by any margin in the last women's singles rubber tomorrow morning.

In the women's pairs, Murphy made it three-from-three when she notched up her third straight win in the event with a victory alongside former Scottish international Kay Moran, and is now within reach of etching her name onto both coveted trophies.
