Baku European Games-Champion Charlie makes Euro Games History

Charlie Maddock became Britain’s first ever female European Games gold medallist in Baku tonight (Tuesday) and admitted:"I still have a lot to learn."

The Stoke on Trent star punched her way to golden point victory over Serbia’s World Championship bronze medallist, Tijana Bogdanovic, after launching her campaign in the same dramatic way.

"Two years ago I never thought I would be doing WTF Taekwondo let alone be in this position,” admitted the former kick boxing champion after her nail-biting 10-9 success.

“Winning the final is the icing on the cake. I feel like I put everything I could into it and I came out on top.

“It’s all a bit crazy,”added the 19-year-old ‘Pocket Rocket’ who joined the Manchester based GB Taekwondo Academy through UK Sport’s talent ID programme, ‘Fighting Chance.'

“Usually I have to attack first,” she said of her dramatic win over Bogdanovic, last year’s European Junior gold medallist. "If I sit back I am going to concede.

"I was just stabbing, stabbing, stabbing throughout the fight. But it didn’t work so I thought I might as well throw that punch.”

Maddock led 4-1 after the first round and was straight on the offensive in round two against her taller opponent. She landed a telling punch and then had an appeal for head shot overruled but still led 8-5..

Bogdanovic wasn’t finished and scored with a headshot to level and then went ahead for the first time with a left check.

But Maddock forced an error, fought back to take the bout into overtime before landing the extra time, golden shot.

The champion 's greatest scare before the final came in her opening bout. Ukrainian Iryna Romoldanova sent the fight into golden point with a head shot five seconds from the end of normal time.

However, Maddock kept her cool and claimed an 8-7 win. She then only dropped four points in her next two contests to reach the final including a 17-3 last eight victory over Erica Nicoli; the Italian having put third seed, Brigida Yaque of Spain.
