Bassett breaks personal best international record

Diamonds co-vice captain and goal shooter Caitlin Bassett put out a career-best international performance in the Diamonds’ 60-55 victory over the Silver Ferns, securing the Netball Quad Series title.

Bassett scored 53 goals from 60 attempts, eclipsing her previous best of 49 goals, set against New Zealand at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and equaled against Jamaica at Netball World Cup SYDNEY 2015.

Diamonds Head Coach Lisa Alexander was pleasantly surprised at the record and was quick to praise her shooter.

“I was a bit shocked when I saw the score when I was getting interviewed for the broadcast. I said ‘oh my goodness, 53 goals!’ That is just amazing. Bassett has played so well this series; she’s just a true professional,” Alexander said.

For Bassett, it was about the team’s performance rather than her own in isolation.

“I think the amount of ball that the defenders turned over and got down to me in attack was absolutely fabulous and it made my life a lot easier,” Bassett explained.

“To come off the court, I don’t think percentage wise I shot what I normally would so I was a little disappointed. To get the win and to win this series and to finish with that game, I’m really proud about that.”

Bassett came within inches of breaking her personal record in the second Netball Quad Series Test against England, however a late substitution saw her end that match with 46 goals from 51 attempts.

“I think coming into this game, I was close against England and I spoke to a journalist who asked ‘do you think you’re going to reach your record?’ and I said ‘absolutely not’ because it’s going to be tougher, it’s going to be really tight in defence.

“I was actually really surprised. I think the bulk of my goals actually came off penalties and Nat passing them off to me, so credit definitely goes to her.”

The Diamonds next game will be in Sydney for the first match of the Constellation Cup on Sunday October 9. Purchase tickets now.
