The night I met Shawanna Jenkins she was cutting a fellow soldier’s hair on the front steps of her tent at Forward Operating Base Payne in Southern Afghanistan.

The Army Combat Engineer is based at Fort Knox, KY. There, the fact that she went to barber school before enlisting quickly spread across the base. Suddenly, a steady stream of soldiers started knocking on her door looking for a trim.
