Sandra Perkovic had a packed and appreciative Letzigrund Stadium crowd all to herself as she rounded off the action on Day 5, on which she claimed a third European discus title with a national record of 71.08m – the finest throw in the world since 1992.
Croatia’s world and Olympic champion had taken the lead with a first round effort of 64.58, and kept getting better, with a second round of 67.37 and a third round of 68.78 before producing her masterpiece in the fifth round.
A roar of triumph and a prolonged wiggle indicated that Perkovic was entirely satisfied with this turn of events, and the crowd responded eagerly to her vigorous invitation to show full appreciation.
Perkovic completed a hat-trick of European hat-tricks on the day, following the achievement of pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie and triple jumper Olha Saladuha in taking their third European golds.
