DANSON STRIKES IN 1-1 DRAW WITH THE USA

- Danson marks 200th England appearance with fine solo goal

- England captain also equals all-time Great Britain and England goals record

- Next up for England at the Vitality Hockey Women's Cup are Ireland at 8pm on Sunday

Alex Danson netted her 62nd England goal on her 200th appearance for her country as the USA held the Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup hosts to a 1-1 draw.

Danson gave England the lead in the 34th minute with a fine solo goal which sent the 10,000 strong crowd into a frenzy, moving level with Marjorie Pollard as joint Great Britain and England's top goal scorers of all time with 115.

However Erin Matson levelled five minutes later with fierce reverse stick strike high into the net past Maddie Hinch.

Speaking after the match Danson said: “I just look at the stadium tonight and the overriding feeling with 10,000 supporters here I feel very proud of how far our sport has come during my career.

“It was incredibly special but for me playing in this game is special, walking out with my team mates of present and past is the hugest honour.”

Townsend also took a moment to heap praise on her teammate Danson, saying: “I know that the one person I would want on my team is Alex Danson and whether she is having a good game or not she shows that fight and she is a leader on the pitch.”

England's next match sees them take on Ireland on Sunday at 8pm in front of another sell out 10,000 crowd. They currently sit second in Pool B with India and Ireland in action tomorrow.
