Day Five at the UCI Track World Championships London

On day five of the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, the event drew to a close following another fantastic day of racing with four new world champions crowned.

The first gold medal of the day was awarded to Laura Trott after an astonishing performance in the women’s omnium. Taking home her third medal of the 2016 world championships, Trott earned her second gold medal this afternoon, with another exceptional display in front of delighted home supporters. Trott finished on 201 points, ahead of France’s Laurie Berthon  (silver , 183 points) and Sarah Hammer of the USA (bronze, 182 points).

In the women’s sprint race, China’s Tianshi Zhong claimed the gold medal and 2016 world title, following an impressive burst of energy beating compatriot, Lin Junhong and earning her the 2016 world title. Defending champion, Germany’s Kristina Vogel, took the bronze medal in the women’s sprint, beating Olympic champion Anna Meares of Australia in the bronze medal final.

The day reached a dramatic climax in the men’s Madison, with Great Britain’s Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish taking home the final gold medal of the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, eight years after their famous world championship win in Manchester 2008. The crowd at Lee Valley VeloPark were on their feet as the pair topped off a fantastic week for the Great Britain Cycling Team. France’s Morgan Kneisky and Benjamin Thomas took home the silver medal with the bronze medal awarded to Spain’s Sebastian Mora Vedri and Albert Torres Barcelo.
