El Sherbini on Verge of Qualifying for PSA World Series Finals

World No.1 Nour El Sherbini is one victory away from qualifying for the season-ending PSA World Series Finals in Dubai after last week’s final victory over World Champion Raneem El Welily, which saw her lift the inaugural Saudi PSA Women’s Masters, PSA World Series title.
Only the top eight players on the PSA World Series Standings will claim a coveted spot at June’s PSA World Series Finals and, after becoming the first female athlete ever to win a professional title in Saudi Arabia, El Sherbini has moved to the top of the women’s standings, overtaking previous leader El Welily to top the standings by 30 points.
Points for the World Series Standings are on offer at all PSA World Series tournaments throughout the 2017/18 season, with the prestigious J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions - which takes place between January 18-25 - the next tournament to have points on offer.
El Sherbini faces Hong Kong’s Joey Chan in round one, with a win guaranteeing the Egyptian a minimum of 15 points, which would be enough to see her qualify for a place in Dubai in the summer.
El Welily stays in second place on the women’s standings, while World No.7 Nour El Tayeb completes an Egyptian top three, with 65 points separating her and joint-fourth placed Joelle King and Nouran Gohar.
World No.4 Laura Massaro follows in sixth, with France’s Camille Serme - who last season topped the PSA Women’s World Series Standings - sitting a place below the Englishwoman.
Meanwhile, a quarter-final finish in Saudi Arabia for Nicol David means that the eight-time World Champion moves into the top eight for the first time this season, 10 points ahead of Alison Waters, Annie Au and Tesni Evans.
The men’s standings are unchanged as World Champion Mohamed ElShorbagy - who is already guaranteed to finish in the top eight - retains his place at the top of the standings, and he is followed by compatriots Ali Farag, Tarek Momen and Marwan ElShorbagy, while Germany’s Simon Rösner is the other player in the top five.
World No.4 Karim Abdel Gawad sits in sixth ahead of 2015 World Championship runner-up Omar Mosaad, while World No.1 Gregory Gaultier and three-time World Champion Nick Matthew stay at joint eighth.
The battle for crucial points on the PSA World Series Standings continues later this week at the Tournament of Champions as the stars of the PSA World Tour do battle inside New York’s iconic Grand Central Terminal.
Glass court action will be shown live on SQUASHTV (Rest of World) and Eurosport Player (Europe only), while the semi-finals and finals will be broadcast live on BT Sport, beIN Sports, Fox Sports Australia and Astro.
The 2017/18 PSA World Series Finals will take place in Dubai between June 5-9. For more information on the tournament, please visit: www.worldseriesfinals.com
