England register second T20 defeat with loss to India

Tri-series hosts India chase down 108 to win by eight wickets in Mumbai.

England Women suffered a second defeat in two days in Mumbai as India chased down 107 to record their first win of the IT20 tri-series.

After a difficult day against Australia, captain Heather Knight again opted to bat first but a batting collapse saw them lose seven wickets for 23 runs and fall from 84/3 in the 11th to their eventual total.

India, buoyed by such a good performance in the field, encountered few problems in getting to their target and won by eight wickets. Smriti Mandhana was once again their standout performer.

England register second T20 defeat with loss to India

England’s thrilling start to the competition – with two comfortable victories – has now been followed by two defeats. Mark Robinson will hope they can return to form in the IT20 tri-series final against Australia on Saturday.

Danni Wyatt and Amy Jones were tentative initially, before they both began to find the boundary. Jones then fell in much the same manner as yesterday, caught for 15 at square-leg trying to pull a short ball.

Wyatt and Tammy Beaumont took advantage of the powerplay but when both fell in the space of four balls India began to take hold.

Nat Sciver and Knight looked to take responsibility but they too were dismissed in quick succession – across seven deliveries – and 59/1 had become 91/5.

It was to get much worse for England with the last five wickets adding just 16. Befuddled by India’s spinners, only Fran Wilson of the middle order offered any resistance.

With such a small total to chase and the promise of their first win on the other side India were quick out of the blocks with Mandhana punishing Katie George’s back-of-a-length deliveries.

Mandhana was lucky to stay at the crease when she was then dropped off the bowling of George, but England did register a wicket when Mithali Raj drove Dani Hazell to mid-off.

Hazell picked up another to remove Jemimah Rodrigues and in general England bowled tightly, with their spinners able to keep the run-rate low.

India didn’t have to panic, though, and their considered chase would in part have been a result of knowing their target was always assailable.

They got there for just the loss of two wickets. A sobering day for England but another learning curve on a tour that has been said to be as much about education as winning.

That said, they’ll be desperate for a different performance and a different result in Saturday’s final against India.
