In what was a physical encounter, England U18 Girls lost the first of three games against their German counterparts in Cologne prior to the start of the Four Nations Invitational tournament on Good Friday.

England got off to a slow start and were punished in the fourth minute when Germany took the lead through an open goal.  The home side doubled their lead with a goal from penalty corner on the 16th minute, but England hit back through Cannock’s Charlotte Craddock who deflected home from Sarah Page’s shot in the 22nd minute.

Germany regained their two goal cushion when a drive down the left led to a shot which was well saved by goalkeeper Holly Crank, but the ball found the back of the net from the rebound and the hosts took a 3-1 lead into half time.

England got off to a much better start in the second half and Ipswich’s Jenny Hall pulled a goal back and then upped the pace to hit home again nine minutes later when Canterbury’s Susie Townsend scored from a straight strike at the top of the D to equalise.  However, Germany regained their lead just a minute later with a reverse stick shot to make it 4-3 and the score remained as such until the final whistle.

These games are part of England’s preparations for the Four Nations Invitational Tournament at Easter in which England will travel to Barcelona to take on Spain, the Netherlands and Germany.  In July, England will compete against seven other nations in Edinburgh in the EuroHockey Youth Nations Championships.
