Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling’s Giorgia Bronzini took third place in the Tour of Chongming Island, just outside the city of Shanghai, China, as the mostly flat race finished in its usual bunch sprint.

The race was won by Dutchwoman Kirsten Wild (Giant-Shimano), who sprinted off Bronzini’s wheel in the closing metres, with Italian Elena Cecchini (Estado de Mexico-Faren) pipping former the two-time road World Champion to second place on the line.

“The team rode really well today,” said Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling team manager Rochelle Gilmore. “Each member of the team is in the best form they’ve been in all season, so they had good morale, and high sprits and confidence leading into the race. They raced really well, they tried to make the race hard. They wanted to put the Giant-Shimano team under some pressure, but the problem was that - even though five of our girls were working hard, to make the race hard - it seemed like not many other teams wanted to make a breakaway.

“Every single attack was closed down,” Gilmore added. “Nothing got more than ten seconds up the road all day. Everybody seemed to want to close it down, even though Wild’s almost impossible to beat on that finish. Giorgia was disappointed that the race wasn’t harder.

“In the end, our girls did a really good lead out, took control, but Wild was on her wheel so it was a difficult position to win from.”

The 130km race began under rain, but dried out in the opening kilometres before it crossed the 73 metre high Shanghai Yangtze River Bridge that made up the only classified climb of the day. Several riders tried to escape the peloton, with some - including Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling’s Swedish Champion Emilia Fahlin - managing to get a few seconds clear, but the bunch stayed together throughout the race.

“Probably the best rider here was the winner, but Giorgia definitely had a chance,” Gilmore said. “She had a real chance because she had a really, really strong team. She’s definitely coming into some super, super form, and it wouldn’t surprise me if she successfully defended her title at the Tour of Zhoushan next week.”
