Gonzalez Garcia Wins Nail-Biter at ASGI Swiss Ladies Open

Carolina Gonzalez Garcia won by one shot from Austria’s Christine Wolf and Tonje Daffinrud from Norway, in a nail-biting finish at the ASGI Swiss Ladies Open in Switzerland.

The Spanish player started the final day with a three shot lead over Csilla Lajtai-Rozca from Hungary and Austrian amateur Emma Spitz, but having not been in a leading position in a professional event before, Gonzalez Garcia knew it was going to be tough to cross the finishing line.

The 25-year-old had maintained her three shot lead standing on the tee on the final hole but a nervy double bogey meant her final round of 74, two over par, was only just good enough for her first victory on the LET Access Series.

“I was very nervous all the way round but I kept it under control. I didn’t know where I was standing because there was no leader board. I was concentrating on my game.”

“I am super happy, I’m amazed I won my first professional tournament. My next event is in Lugo. In golf, every day is different but I have more security in my game now.”

Wolf finished strongly with a final round of 68, four under par, for a 7 under par total, alongside Daffinrud, who closed with a 3 under, 69. Both players will now head to Morocco for the LET’s Lalla Meryem Cup, which takes place from the 5 – 8 May at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat.

Sweden’s Lynn Carlsson (68), Laura Murray (70) from Scotland and Austrian amateur Emma Spitz (73) finished in a tie for 4th place at 6 under par, 210.

Gonzalez Garcia’s win takes her into second place on the LETAS Order of Merit, behind fellow countrywoman Luna Sobron, who won the opening event of the season, the Terre Blanche Ladies Open.

The LET Access Series moves to Spain for the 3rd event of the season, the Ribeira Sacra Patrimonio de la Humanidad International Ladies Open, which takes place from the 11 – 13 May at Augas Santas Balneario & Golf Resort.
