Increasing interest in the Women's World Cup; comparison of interest between 2007, 2011 and 2015

The Women’s World Cup was established in 1991 many years after the Men’s World Cup started. Since it’s establishment millions enjoy the Women’s World Cup.  The tournament is held every 4 years and a total of 24 teams compete for the trophy. Interestingly, as you can see from the data below, the interest in the Women’s World Cup has increased from 2007, 2011 and 2015. In this article we take a look at some of the reasons, which may account for such a rise in interest.

In 2004, FIFA declared that they would give part of their financial assistance funds to women’s football. FIFA stated that the 15% funding was just a starting point and many companies invest a lot more. It’s likely that the extra funding helped improve the standards of women football which in turn sparked more interest by the time it came to the 2007 Women’s World Cup.

In 2011 the interest in the Women’s World Cup soared! There are several reasons that could account for this. It’s been long debated and argued that women sporting events receive less coverage than male related sports. However, we are living in times where the equality between sexes is narrowing. The media have started to cover women’s sports more. The increase in coverage has included hockey, basketball and many other sports not just the Women’s World Cup.

Moreover, 2011 saw the introduction of the very first FA Women’s Football League. This was a great development for women footballers and no doubt played a part in the increasing amount of interest in the Women’s 2011 World Cup. The ladies now have their own league, which has naturally raised the standards in women’s football and has helped the sport gain popularity.

The interest in the Women’s World Cup 2015 was unprecedented and a welcomed surprise for all of those dedicated to the tournament. There was a sharp increase in the amount of fans that watched the World Cup on TV. On average 5.3 million people tuned into watch the six matches on Fox and Fox Sports 1. This was a 121% increase from the 2011 tournament! A staggering 20.3 million fans tuned into watch U.S. beat Japan in the final. This is likely due to the better coverage of the tournament, making it more accessible to viewers.

It’s also interesting to note that the popularity of the Women’s World Cup varies by region. The tournament is particularly popular in the U.S, and some of their critics have even accused the UK of sidelining the event! However, this is likely not the case. The U.S. has the advantage of time zone and proximity to the event in comparison to the UK.

TV ratings and attendance numbers is not the only evidence for the increase in interest in the Women’s World Cup. The number of people that are engaging in betting on the Women’s World Cup has also increased. In 2007, only a small amount of bettors placed their money on the tournament. However, this figure increased sharply in 2011 and again in 2015 according to Marathon bet statistics. Increasing popularity, TV coverage and standards, it’s no surprise that people are choosing to engage in betting on the Women’s World Cup.

The interest in the Women’s World Cup is going from strength to strength and is sure to continue doing so in the future!
