Italy emerged as the headline story of Matchday 3, producing France 2019's first major upset - and maintaining European teams' fine start to the competition - with a stunning second-half comeback against Australia.

After Barbara Bonansea scored twice for the Azzurre, Cristiane went one better for Brazil as the 2007 finalists shrugged off their poor recent form - and the absence of star player Marta - to cruise past Jamaica. England then survived a late fightback by neighbours Scotland to edge out the tournament debutantes in Nice.

Australia 1-2 Italy

Team Reporter analysis

Pete Smith (AUS)
A mixed performance from Australia, who after an erratic start looked highly dangerous throughout the first half. But having survived two tight VAR decisions, the Matildas lost their rhythm in the second half and were punished in the final seconds. Defensive concerns remain for a side that conceded eight in their two outings prior to this one, and were again caught out by Italy on several occasions.

Sonja Nikcevic (ITA)
Ahead of this match, Australia's coach said that he feared Italy - and the Azzurre showed that he was right to do so. The weren't intimidated by one of the tournament favourites and put on a real show on their long-awaited return to the Women's World Cup.Barbara Bonansea's late winner provided a dream finish, and the celebrations on the pitch showed just how significant this result was to the entire squad.

England 2-1 Scotland

Team Reporter analysis

Laure James (ENG)
Phil Neville had spoken frequently of the confidence and self-belief his England players possess, and this looked like the perfect opportunity to show these qualities. But were they too complacent where Scotland's goalscorer, the persistent Claire Emslie, was concerned? The history-making forward repeatedly sniffed out gaps around the full-backs and it paid off. Overall however, delightful link-up play between Lucy Bronze and Nikita Parris, an effervescent midfield and some expert finishing earned England a hard-fought opening win.

Aileen Larkin (SCO)
Although the Scotland squad will be disappointed not to take a point, they more than proved themselves on the world stage. If this is how they perform against England - the third-ranked team in the world and genuine title contenders - players and fans can look forward with fully justified hope to to their next two Group D fixtures.
