Magatti double ends France Women's Grand Slam hopes

Maria Magatti's last-gasp score gave Italy Women a surprise 17-12 victory to end France's hopes of a second successive Grand Slam and throw the 2015 Women's Six Nations title race wide open.

Magatti went over for her second of the night in the right-hand corner to break a 12-12 draw but Gaelle Mignot's France troops will head into the last game against England next week with a chance of defending their overall title.

Unbeaten for their last nine matches in this competition, Les Bleues were undone by an Italian team who were very impressive in running in three tries.

It was Magatti who claimed the first score of the match with only five minutes on the clock, the winger, who also bagged a double the week before as Italy beat Scotland for their first win of the competition, racing clear for an interception score.

The French response was almost immediate however as Julie Billes dotted down for her sixth try of this year's Championship, Tremouliere then added the conversion to level up proceedings at 7-7.

With 37 minutes on the clock, the impressive Italians then re-took the lead after a Sofia Stefan score but once again France hit back immediately.

With little time before the half-time whistle, Caroline Boujard was fed by Safi N'Diaye and burst clear for her second try of this year's Championship. Tremouliere's conversion was off target meaning it was 12-12 at the interval.

After the break both sides struggled to create the same clear cut chances, Tremouliere guilty of missing two penalty kicks at goal for the visitors.

But in the final ten minutes it was Italy turning the screw and Magatti went over in the right corner for a match-winning score to the delight of the home fans at Nuovi Impianti.

Defeat, France's first in 2015, means either Ireland or Wales Women can join Les Bleues at the top of the table when they face off on Sunday.
