Mannix a late withdrawal from Diamonds camp

Victorian defender Emily Mannix has been a late withdrawal from the Diamonds Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in her role as training partner, after being not cleared by medical staff.

The training camp will be held Tuesday 13 – Friday 16 March at the Netball Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport. It is the first time the Diamonds Commonwealth Games team comes together since their selection.

Emily sustained a bump to the head in a pre-season match in February against the Queensland Firebirds in Brisbane. Emily has been closely monitored by the Melbourne Vixens’ medical staff and her return to full training is progressing well, however she did not obtain medical clearance for the Diamonds camp.

NSW Swifts defender Sarah Klau has been called into the camp as an invitee, to assist in training. It will be her first time in the Diamonds environment. Klau was a member of the 2017 Australian Fast5 Netball World Series Team and has 22 national league appearances.

Diamonds Head Coach Lisa Alexander said, “all athletes are required to receive medical clearance to attend any Diamonds session. We will closely monitor Emily leading into the Commonwealth Games Preparation Camp in Mooloolaba.

“Sarah had a strong Suncorp Super Netball season with NSW Swifts and impressed at last year’s Fast5 Netball World Series. Entering the Diamonds environment as an invitee will provide additional support for the Commonwealth Games team, and be a valuable experience for her.”

Australia opens its 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games campaign against Northern Ireland on Thursday 5 April before its remaining pool matches against Barbados (6 April), South Africa (8 April), Fiji (9 April) and Jamaica (11 April).
