Merrien wins The World Cup

In the women’s event, Guernsey's Alison Merrien caused an upset in the final showdown by defeating three-time reigning champion Jo Edwards, from New Zealand.

Merrien, the 2008 champion, extracted revenge on the Black Jacks star 7-6, 9-5 after dropping a thrilling edge-of-your-seat final last year.

Australian vice captain Karen Murphy bowed out of the tournament after losing her semi-final to Guernsey’s Alison Merrien 7-10, 6-3, 4-5.

The semi-final loss to Merrien came after the Australian defeated Spain’s Josephine Morris in the quarter-final stages of the competition, in what was a tight three set encounter where Murphy overcame the Spaniard 11-3, 7-8, 4-2.

The 2006 Commonwealth Games pairs gold medallist began her 2012 World Cup campaign in successful fashion with a convincing victory over American Dee McSparran 11-4, 14-3.

The win over McSparran was followed by seven more victories in the 10 round preliminary draw for Murphy. Only losses to Canada’s Josephine Lee and Thailand’s Meta Jennison prevented the Cabramatta superstar finishing atop of her section.
