Defending champion Karolina Pliskova earned a decisive victory over countrywoman Barbora Strycova to reach the quarterfinals at the Nature Valley International
Pliskova led 3-1 in their previous head-to-head, but Strycova won that aforementioned grass court encounter at the 2016 Nature Valley Classic, and pushed the perennial WTA Ace Leader to three sets at this year's Australian Open.
A former Wimbledon quarterfinalist, Strycova kept things close with Pliskova - who hasn't always felt comfortable on grass - throughout the 83 minute match on Court 1.
"I feel much better now than last week in Birmingham," Pliskova added, noting her loss to Magdalena Rybarikova. "I'm happy it's improving match by match, and hopefully tomorrow will be even better. I think I can serve better than I did today, but today was enough, so hopefully I can improve."
A Gutsy performance from both sides
