Richards, Van Eldik and Agar win World titles

NSW’s Kelly Richards and Natasha Van Eldik put the finishing touches on a near perfect week after triumphing in the women’s pairs final to capture this year’s crown.

Drawn against local Western Australian hopes Kerry Andersen and Noelene Abe, the Raymond Terrace duo clinched a thriller to prevail 9-6, 2-9, 2-1.

“It’s a bit of a shock,” Van Eldik said following her win.

“We knew that it was going to be tough coming over here because you’ve got the best from every state.

“It was just amazing to come away with the win.”

In the women’s singles, NSW’s Jan Agar prevailed against Australian Captain Lynsey Armitage, who represents arch rival Queensland, in the tie-break to also cement her position at the world tournament.

“It’s very exciting,” Agar said after her win.

“I’m very much over the moon at the moment.

“It’s a very unexpected result but I’m absolutely thrilled to have beaten her and played as well as I did because she played so well too.

“I was pretty confident going into the tie-break, I wasn’t nervous and I thought ‘I’ve got a big shot at this, just keep concentrating and hopefully it will work out’.

“I’m pretty excited about going to Cyprus and being in Australian colours and I hope I can do them proud.”

In a show of support for his fallen teammate, Wilkie expressed his disappointment at not being able to attend the prestigious event with fellow club, state and national representative Armitage, but congratulated Agar on her victory.

“I feel sorry for my club mate Lynsey who had been playing really well and got out to a good start to win the first set fairly comfortably but unfortunately she couldn’t finish it,” Wilkie said after learning of his teammate’s loss.

“But well done to Jan who played really well.

“Both Lynsey and myself had great support from Club Helensvale to help get us here, so it was a really great effort from Club Helensvale, they have really looked after us.”
