Rowing for Success - GB's only Female Coach

Rowing for Success – GB’s only Female Coach

Great Britain’s rowing team enjoyed a highly successful Rowing World Championships at the picturesque Lac d’Aigubelette in France to cap off what has been a terrific 2015 for the squad.

For one coach in particular the silver won by her crew in France was even more special. Jane Hall is the coach of the Women’s Four who were narrowly pipped to gold by USA in September’s World Championships. Hall is currently the only female coach in the GB Rowing Team and having taken charge of a fairly inexperienced crew, to leave with a silver medal was a remarkable achievement.

The newly assembled four of Rebecca Chin, Karen Bennett, Lucinda Gooderham and Holly Norton were not expected to challenge for a medal but under the guidance of Hall pushed USA all the way to the finish line.

“We knew the Americans would be hard to beat. Our aim was to go out hard and just really trust in our strong performance. Our coach Jane Hall has been brilliant for us”, said Gooderham.

Hall, who last year visited the FA’s National Football Centre, underlined that rowers can learn a lot from football in terms of the margins between gold and silver.

"In every sport nowadays we talk about how the margins needed to win a gold medal or a world cup are getting smaller and smaller, and so it could be one thing that you have never even thought about that you by chance learn by coming somewhere like this that could make the difference”, said Hall.

British Rowing use SAS advanced analytics and data scientists that enable coaches such as Jane Hall to examine how to make the boat faster. In a sport in which medals are decided by hundredths of a second, the support that SAS provide in collating and examining statistics from all training sessions and championship events helps create the marginal gains that may make all the  difference between gold and silver.
