Top-three of 2009 eliminated in preliminary round
Norway, Hungary and Russia were the main victims at the preliminary round of the 2011 Women’s19 European Championship, held in The Netherlands. The three teams, first, second and third two years ago, were eliminated and cannot end higher than place nine.
The Norwegian team was already troubled by a series of injuries and also lost key player Marie Henriksen (knee). ,,We were just not strong enough now’’, said the Norwegian coach. Russia was surprised by Romania on the opening day and also lost the key match in Almelo against Spain. Hungary finished only third in their group.
Romania and Spain now move to Arnhem to play against The Netherlands and Austria in the main round. The Dutch home town, cheered on by 1500 fans, made a wonderful impression by winning its three matches with great performance. The other team with a perfect 100 % score is Denmark, the team topped group C in Leek. In group II of the Main Round the Danes will play in Maastricht against Serbia, Sweden and Croatia.
