Triumphs and tribulations at the AO

The second round of the women’s pairs draw at the $125,000 Australian Open had all the classic tales and suspense of a Hollywood blockbuster.

There were triumphant victories for defending champions Kay Moran and Karen Murphy, scrapping through their second round encounter against the valiant mother-daughter combination Gayle and Brooke Edwards, prevailing 5-12, 9-6, 3-2.

The formidable forces of Moran and Murphy were locked in a tight tussle for almost two and a half hours against the Victorian residents, picking up two shots on the final end of the tie break to secure their berth in tomorrow’s quarter-finals.

The same however couldn’t be said for Australian squad representative Lynsey Armitage and her partner Anne Johns, who endured the crushing fate of bowing out of this year’s draw to Broadbeach’s Anne McClure and Queensland’s state triples champion Christina Pavlov.

Mosman Park’s Lisa Featherby and Linda Warburton proved too strong for defending Australian Open women’s singles champion Lisa Philips and her skip Shenayde Heldt, ousting the pair in a titanic tie-break, to advance through the draw 4-7, 12-5, 3-2.

Across the greens young-guns Kristina Kristic and Rechelle Cole produced the upset of the round knocking out 2010 Australian Open women’s pairs finalist Rebecca Quail and her partner, A-Squad representative Carla Odgers.

The teenage sensations needed less than two hours to send their opponents crashing out of the draw prevailing in straight sets 8-8, 7-5, to now set up a quarter-finals clash against NSW’s Melyn Fleming and Carmen Anderson.

Catch all the action from the women’s pairs quarter-finals live from 2:30pm AEST tomorrow at the Darebin International Sports Centre.
