U.S. Women Fall, 4-1, to Canada in Training Camp Exhibition

The U.S. Women’s National Team fell, 4-1, to Canada in an exhibition matchup Friday night at UPMC Lemieux Sportsplex. The two teams will meet for the second and final exhibition of the teams’ joint training camp Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Fans can stream the game live on HockeyTV.com.

“The game certainly didn’t go the way we drew it up,” said head coach Bob Corkum (Salisbury, Mass.). “You have to tip your hat to Canada. They came out and played a wonderful game, and we just didn’t have an answer for them. We’ll go back, look at some video and get ready for Sunday.”

Canada struck first just over six minutes into the first frame. On a two-on-one, Marie-Philip Poulin passed across to Victoria Bach, who made a move past Team USA goaltender Maddie Rooney (Andover, Minn.). Four minutes later, Sarah Fillier improved the Canada lead to 2-0 on a shot from the slot.

Team USA would answer at the 14:31 mark of the first thanks to a Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) goal. After Emily Matheson (Buffalo, N.Y.) came down the right side, Knight tapped in a deflected pass to cut the score to 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

Canada would score early in the second period to make it a two-goal game. On a short-handed opportunity, Philip-Poulin collected the puck at center ice and went in on a breakaway, beating Rooney on the glove side. Bach added her second goal of the game shortly after, making it 4-1 and capping the scoring.

The U.S. had several scoring chances in the second period, including a pair of shots that deflected off the pipes during a 5-on-3 powerplay, but could not find the back of the net.

Monique Lamoreux-Morando (Grand Forks, N.D.) led Team USA with five shots on net, while Lee Stecklein (Roseville, Minn.) and Cayla Barnes (Eastvale, Calif.) each had three.

NOTES: Hilary Knight was named the third star of the game… The two teams will meet on December 14 in Hartford, Conn. in the first game of the 2019-20 Rivalry Series. Tickets can be purchased here.
