Vardarli Demirmen banking on Fenerbahce defense

Birsel Vardarli Demirnen (TUR) - Fenerbahce (EuroLeague Women)

ISTANBUL (EuroLeague Women) - Turkey national team favourite Birsel Vardarli Demirmen is hoping defense will keep Fenerbahce on the winning track.

Having lost for the first time this season in EuroLeague Women a little under a fortnight ago at Perfumerias Avenida, the Istanbul giants hit back last week and made a serious statement with a 75-50 lockdown of the highly rated Tango Bourges Basket.

Next up is a tricky road trip to Beretta Famila Schio and Fenerbahce will have to continue producing the goods defensively if they want to take pole position in Group B, since there is currently a three-way tie at the top of the standings.

"We started the game very well, especially on the defensive side of things," said the playmaker reflecting on the impressive effort against Bourges.

"I think we organised our offense very well, based on our defense.

"That was an important game for us because we had lost our previous game in Salamanca against Avenida."

Her sentiment was shared by head coach Jacek Winnicki, who has been delighted with the attitude of his team since their loss in Spain.

"Last week was one of the best defensive performances of this season," he declared.

"We kept our aggression for the entire game and I think that was the key."

Fenerbahce will need the same level of intensity to prevail at Schio, with the Italians showing they can win without their prize asset Chiney Ogwumike who has been out injured.

CB Avenida and Nadezhda are the other two clubs vying for top spot in Group B and they will both be eyeing up victories this week. Avenida travel to take on the still winless BK Imos Brno and Nadezhda entertain the struggling Agu Spor Kulubu.

Tango Bourges will try to recover from their mauling in Turkey last week when they match-up against Energa Torun.

Group A sees the last remaining flawless record put under scrutiny when UMMC take the floor at the Steel Arena in Kosice, with the Good Angels having never beaten the Russian team in the competition.

Elsewhere, Lattes Montpellier welcome Wisla Can-Pack and something has to give when Dynamo Kursk and ZVVZ USK Prague lock horns, since both teams are currently on an impressive three-game winning streaks.

The tournament's leading scorer Nnemkadi Ogwumike will match up for Kursk against the top EuroLeague Women rebounder Kia Vaughn, in one of many fascinating match-ups.
