Bristol and Arsenal scrape into FA Cup semi finals

Premier League National Division side Barnet will join Super League sides Bristol Academy, Arsenal and Liverpool in the FA Cup semi final draw after wins over West Ham, Millwall, Sunderland and Doncaster.

Millwall Lionesses 1-2 Bristol Academy

FA WSL side Bristol Academy had to come from behind to beat National Division Millwall in a tough, physical encounter at Eden Park Avenue.

The Lionesses took a sixth minute lead when striker Kate Longhurst poked home from an Emma Beckett corner kick after a goalmouth scramble.

The Londoners put a lot of pressure on Bristol's defence as Lindsay Morgan just missed out on a second from a Meghan McKeag cross.

The Academy were level just before the half hour mark; Helen Bleazard headed home from a Corinne Yorston free kick, and they were ahead five minutes later through Jess Fishlock.

Former Millwall striker Ann-Marie Heatherson crossed for Fishlock to coolly slot past goalkeeper Debbie Cole to put the visitors 2-1 up at the interval, although Harley Bennett had a strong shout for a penalty turned down just before the break.

Millwall had chances to take the game into extra time; McKeag made England international Siobhan Chamberlain tip a shot over early on and Naomi Cole missed a gilt-edged chance in stoppage time, but Bristol held out.

Manager Mark Sampson told WSR he was pleased with how his team stood up to the physical challenge, saying: "It was a physical test - you expect nothing less when you play away to Millwall.

"They are a team who work hard, show 100 per cent commitment for their football club, make a lot of tackles and make you defend a lot of high balls.

"I was very pleased with how our girls stood up to it and defended fantastically well. I thought we controlled the game as well as we could on a difficult surface and against difficult opposition.

"I saw a different side to my team today. We had lots of character, hard work, togetherness, commitment and lots of people who are willing to put their bodies on the line for us."

Sunderland 2-3 Arsenal, after extra time

Sunderland put up a brave performance, taking Arsenal into extra time before Ellen White settled the game with a late winner.

Rachel Furness put the Mackems in the lead early on but Arsenal came back to 2-1 up before Sunderland skipper Steph Bannon took the game into all the way.

A proud Mick Mulhern said: "I'm delighted with the girls' performance and proud of them too. All you can hope to do to is earn the respect of the country's top team and I know we've done that."

Liverpool 3-0 Doncaster Rovers Belles

Liverpool eased into the semi finals with a dominant display over fellow FA WSL side Doncaster and took their goalscoring total to eight goals from two FA Cup games.

Kelly Jones put the hosts a goal up early on, converting at the back post from a Nicky Harding cross and they missed a host of chances to put the game to bed within the first 30 minutes.

Cheryl Foster won a free kick early in the second period and curled in a 20-yarder from the resulting set piece before Lynda Shepherd emphatically sealed the win in the last minute.

After the game, goalscorer Foster told Liverpoolladiesfc.co.uk: "It's obviously very encouraging to beat another Super League team 3-0.

"We're happy with our performance, and pleased to score three good goals. I thought we could have scored more, but they had chances too and we're very pleased to progress to the next round.

Barnet 3-2 West Ham United, after extra time

Barnet scraped home against Southern Division West Ham thanks to a 111th minute Zoe Lance finish as they played their second 120 minutes in just four days.

Stacey Sowden put them a goal to the good early on with her 199th goal for the Bees but the Hammers took the lead in the second period.

Gemma Shepherd and Joanne Woodgates had West Ham 2-1 up before the hour but Jess Trimnell scored a penalty 10 minutes from time to take the game into extra time and Lance out the Bees into their second successive FA Cup semi final.
