Giorgia Bronzini takes second place in the Giro del Trentino

Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling’s Giorgia Bronzini won the sprint for second place at the end of the 21st Giro del Trentino Alto Adige-Südtirol, as part of a five rider group behind race winner Valentina Scandolara (Orica-AIS).

The former two-time road World Champion was able to outpace Rossella Ratto (Estado de Mexico-Faren) at the end of the 108km race, which has been cut to one day after having been a stage race in previous years.

As expected, the largely flat race was decided on the main climb of the Maso San Valentino, which came in the final 25km.

“It was a little bit quiet at the beginning, because the first 80km was flat, and the first lap nobody really made an effort to attack,” Bronzini explained. “In the second lap there were some attacks from [Orica-AIS] so the girls did a lot of work to get into the breaks and stay there."

“Peta [Mullens] and Bea [Bartelloni] were in the big break until the bottom of the climb, but because there were some stronger climbers in the group I asked the girls to work with [Estado de Mexico] Faren - who wanted to bring Fabiana Luperini to the front.

“They worked so hard - all of them - and we caught the break at the bottom of the climb,” Bronzini added. “I stayed in front with a little group, but then Luperini attacked and was alone for a long time, all the way to the top.”

The chasers caught up with the defending champion as she reached the top and, as the group began to split on the descent, Eugenia Bujak (BTC) put in a big attack. The Polish rider managed to create a gap herself, but was caught with a kilometre to go.

With 600 metres to go, however, with the race seemingly heading for a small group sprint, Scandolara escaped.

“I looked at Ratto, because she is the second fastest, and she looked at me,” Bronzini said. “We looked at each other and Scandolara was gone!”

Scandolara managed to stay away from the chasing riders, but Bronzini was able to beat Ratto in the sprint for second place.

“I’m happy for the result because I came down from altitude only yesterday,” said Bronzini. “I wanted to catch my form, and it was okay, especially on the climb. I feel a little bit bad for not getting the victory though, because the girls worked really hard for me, they trusted me, and I would like to have given them the win. I can’t wait to bring them one!”

1. Valentina Scandolara (Orica-AIS)
2. Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling)
