Meg Lanning smashes records in victory over Ireland

The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars have recorded a record-breaking 78-run win over Ireland in their third match of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 against Ireland in Sylhet today.

The margin is the biggest ever winning margin (by runs) for an Australian women’s side and the highest innings score for an Australian women’s side.

After winning the toss and opting to bat the Australian side piled on the runs setting a total of 4-191 from their 20 overs. The target proved too high for Ireland as the finished 7-113 from their 20 overs. Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars captain Meg Lanning was named player-of-the-match.

Lanning set all kinds of records with her knock of 126 runs from 65 balls; it is the highest ever total by a female in international T20 cricket, the highest total by a female in an ICC Women’s World Twenty20 tournament, the highest ever T20 score by an Australian female, it was Lanning’s first T20 century and it pushed her beyond 1000 T20 career runs making her the first Australian woman to achieve this.

Despite a gallant run chase Ireland failed to reach the set target, falling 78 runs short with a total of 7-113, with Isobel Joyce (28) and Clare Shillington (22) the leading run-scorers. Ellyse Perry (2-17) and Erin Osborne (2-29) were the multiple wicket takers, with Perry’s figures taking her beyond 50 T20 international wickets.
