Monday 13th August, London – As the curtain falls on an exhilarating Olympic Games, Eurostar, the official International Rail Services Provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, proudly waved goodbye to hundreds of jubilant athletes from the Dutch, French and Belgian Olympic teams today as they departed London on three specially charted Eurostar trains.

Amongst the Dutch, French and Belgian athletes and medal winners, was Dutch Gold medalist Marianne Vos, who beat Team GB’s Lizzie Armitstead to the top of the podium in the Woman’s Road Race, arrived into St Pancras after a successful Olympics for all three countries. French medalists in judo and swimming, including Camille Muffat, who clinched gold from Team GB’s Rebecca Adlington in the 400m freestyle, also joined the celebrating teams on their journey home.

Continuing the carnival atmosphere from the spectacular Closing Ceremony, the departing athletes were greeted on the platform by Beatles tribute band, ‘The Beatlez’, to sing ‘Hello Goodbye’ and other Beatles hits. The Olympians were also joined by members of the Royal College of Music brass band, who welcomed the teams at the start of their homeward journeys, providing a farewell not to be forgotten.

Marking the conclusion of their London 2012 journeys and their time in London, medal winners were presented with bouquets of flowers on the Eurostar platform as they boarded their trains.  Using plants and flowers from around Great Britain, each with special significance such as Rosemary for remembrance, the bouquets were taken home by the athletes as cherished mementos.

Commenting on the departure of the athletes, Mary Walsh, Eurostar Director of Communications, said: “We have had an extremely successful period during the Games, just like all the incredible Olympians we have had the honour of welcoming onto the Eurostar platform today. St Pancras has been awash with sports fans and athletes throughout the Games and it has been a tremendously exciting place to be. Since the arrival of the first French and Belgian teams three weeks ago, we have ensured the athletes have enjoyed smooth, stress free journeys into London and we hope they have thoroughly enjoyed their time here and everything that Great Britain has to offer.”

Eurostar is proud to be the official International Rail Services Provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and has carried the French and Belgian teams to and from London to compete in the Games, as well as the Dutch national team home by Eurostar.

As partners of both the French and Belgian National Paralympic Committees, Eurostar is also carrying the French and Belgian Paralympic teams to and from London on specially adapted trains.
