WORLD CLASS JUNIOR GOLFERS SET TO TEE IT UP INCENTENARY GIRLS IN PANMURE

The R&A Girls Amateur Championship will be contested by 144 competitors from 26 countries at Panmure from Tuesday 13-Saturday 17 August.

Players from as far afield as Australia, Canada, South Africa and the United States of America will join a strong contingent from Great Britain and Ireland and mainland Europe at the Angus links as the championship, founded in 1919, celebrates its centenary year.

Duncan Weir, Executive Director – Golf Development and Amateur Championships at The R&A, said, “The Girls Amateur Championship continues to attract a world class field and we are looking forward to welcoming golfers from around the world to Panmure.

“The course is in excellent condition and we are anticipating an exciting week of high quality golf as the world’s best young players compete to win this prestigious title.”

The highest ranked player in the field is Alessia Nobilio (WAGR™ no.6) of Italy who heads into the championship having picked up two domestic wins in the Italian Ladies Stroke Play Championship and the Citta di Milano Trofeo Gianni Albertini. Nobilio was a member of the Continent of Europe team that won the Vagliano Trophy at Royal St George’s in June.

Other notable entries include Slovenia’s Pia Babnik (WAGR™ no.32), who has already shown an aptitude for links golf after storming to a seven-shot win in the 2019 Helen Holm Scottish Womens Open Championship at Royal Troon, and Lucie Malchirand of France (WAGR™ no.30), winner of the French Junior International U21 Championship.

Two former champions are also returning to challenge for their second title – Lily May Humphreys (WAGR™ no.26) who won at Enville two years ago and 2016 winner Emilie Paltrinieri (WAGR™ no.34) – and both players arrive at Panmure in good form.

Humphreys has already won the Annika Invitational Europe, the Irish Womens Open Stroke Play Championship and the Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play Championship this year, while Paltrinieri lifted the German Girls Open title at St Leon-Rot this summer and won the European Girls Team Championship with Italy last month.

Scottish hopes will rest with Broomieknowe’s Hannah Darling who has risen to prominence over the last 18 months with 2019 victories in the Scottish Girls Open and Scottish Girls Amateur championships. She also won The R&A Girls U16 Amateur Championship last year.

The 2019 R&A Girls U16 Amateur Champion, Francesca Fiorellini, also from Italy, and Isabelle Holpfer of Austria, who finished runner-up to compatriot Emma Spitz in the Girls Amateur at Ardglass last year, will also tee it up in Angus when the championship gets underway on Tuesday.

The first stage of the championship comprises two qualifying rounds of stroke play before the leading 64 players progress to match play. Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes including Saturday’s final. The winner will receive exemptions into the 2020 Womens Amateur Championship at Kilmarnock (Barassie) and the Augusta National Womens Amateur Championship.

Scoring from The R&A Girls Amateur Championship will be available at www.randa.org/Championships. Follow The R&A on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for updates on social media.

Admission and parking are free of charge for spectators visiting Panmure.
