Yelena Isinbayeva plans her final farewell

Yelena Isinbayeva has announced that next year will be her last in the sport.

Isinbayeva, 32, is retiring after the Olympics in Rio in 2016 which she hopes will be a summer where she can stretch her world record of 5.06m.
Whatever happens, she is one of the greatest European athletes in the history of this or any other sport.

"I think it's so cool to perform at one more Olympics. I know for 100 percent that 2016 will be my farewell year. I will have a farewell tour when after each competition I will say thanks and goodbye to the audience."
Isinbayeva, who became a mum last June with the birth of daughter Eva, won Olympic gold in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008 and a total of 11 major championships gold medals throughout her career.

But the early signs of the glory that was ahead came back in 2001 in Grosseto when she was the European Junior champion with a vault of 4.40m.
She won senior titles at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Madrid in 2005 with a world record of 4.90m and outdoors at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Göteborg with 4.80.

Her world record exploits have made her such a superstar, being the first woman to break five metres – in London in 2005 – and smashing the record, indoors and out, on 17 occasions.
The first of those was in Gateshead in 2003 with 4.82m and the last of those in Zurich in 2009, the mark which still stands today.

Olympics – 2 (2004, 2008)
World Championships – 3 (2005, 2007, 2013)
World Indoor Championships – 4 (2004, 2006, 2008, 2012)
