Detroit Dark Angels beat Cincinnati Sizzle to start 2011 season 2-0

Team looks to keep the winning streak alive

The Detroit Dark Angels have served a little notice to their Women’s Football Alliance rivals, and that lesson is that Kionka Field at John Glenn High School is the Dark Angels house and these Angels are serious about winning on their home field.

The Dark Angels coaching staff had done their homework and devised a scheme that took advantage of match up concerns in the Sizzle secondary. Head Coach Darrin Wubbenhorst (Coach Wub) had this to say; “We threw the ball more against the Sizzle because we just felt they didn't match up talent wise against our very athletic receivers.”

Leading the charge at that receiver position was WR #83 Cheryl “Doc” Luther. Luther caught four passes for 110 yards and one touchdown. That included an impressive catch and run for 55 yards where Luther fell on mid field. An inexperienced Sizzle defense failed to touch her and Luther wisely rose to her feet to scamper the rest of the way for the score.

While Luther and RB Junita Payne #28 got the big plays, the Angels offense once again turned to Full Back Ramona Cox #19 to get them the tough yards. Cox ended the game with just 23 yards rushing but three of those rushes ended in touchdowns. Coach Wub said simply, “Ramona cannot be stopped.”

Even though this team put up 33 points, and 314 yards of total offense once again the main theme was a tough Angels defense that always finds a way to get a stop when the need to. Coach Wub added, “Our offense played better.  Our Defense only gave up 7 points.  The Sizzle had a very powerful RB we didn't seem to have an answer for at times, but when we needed the defense to get a stop they did.”

Even though the Sizzle schemed to lock up a dominating Angels Defensive Line, which left other defensive players open to have a big game. This week the Angels defense was led by LB Cortney Tucker #22. She ended the night with 10 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and a tipped pass. In all the Angels defense got three turnovers, and that helped choke off Sizzle drives.

Now the Dark Angels face a big challenge as they move their show to the road to take on the upstart Indiana Crash. That game will take place Saturday April 16th at 7pm. Their home field is Park Tudor High School located at 7200 North College Ave. Indianapolis, IN.
