LUANDA (Afrobasket Women/FIBA World Championship for Women) - Angola's women aren't going to be content with a first Afrobasket title in 2011 and a debut appearance at the Olympics in London.
The recent success is only the beginning, fans hope, of a run that will see the national team program become one of the powerhouses on the continent.
With that in mind, coach Anibal Moreira is going to the 2013 Afrobasket Women in September with the expectation of not only reaching the Final, which would qualify the team for next year's FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey.
He will travel to Mozambique expecting to lead the national side to a second straight championship in the tournament.
The Group B opponents will be Nigeria, Mali, Cameroon, Kenya and Cape Verde.
"Our goals are well defined because the current holders of the continental title can’t go to the competition thinking about anything else," Moreira said.
"We believe that our athletes have the potential to meet the aspirations of the nation, but this involves careful preparation and resolution of all outstanding issues.
"Moreover, the direction of the federation has a clear vision in this direction and believes that everything will be done to perfection."
The Afrobasket in Mali was Angola's first gold in the competition, yet they had reached the podium on several occasions before then.
The national team captured bronze medals in 1981, 1986, 1994, 2007 and 2009.
Twelve teams in all will compete at the Afrobasket Women in Maputo, Mozambique, with the event getting underway on 20 September.
