Australia broke its own world record in winning the women's 4x100m freestyle relay at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games on Thursday 5 April.

Australian women's 4x100m relay team celebrate their world record and gold medal.

The Australian quartet was never in doubt for the gold medal, with lead-off swimmer Shayna Jack and Bronte Campbell, swimming the second leg, establishing a one body-length lead over the rest of the field.

Despite having taken part in two individual events before the relay, Emma McKeon managed to extend that lead to two body-lengths before handing over to former 100m freestyle world record holder Cate Campbell.

Going into the anchor leg, Australia was 0.37 seconds outside its world-record mark which it set at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Cate Campbell, who took a break from competitive swimming after Rio, showed she was back at her best and sprinted home to stop the clock at three minutes 30.05 seconds, lowering the previous record by 0.6 seconds.

Canada claimed silver in 3:33.92 and England (3:38.40) took the bronze.
