Australian squad unveiled for new year

With their sights focused firmly on this year's World Championships Bowls Australia has today announced its national squad for 2012.

In an effort to further strengthen the team, the selection of teenage sensations Victoria's Lisa Phillips and NSW's Sarah Boddington will inject young blood into the women's squad along with NSW's Kate Carriage who has advanced from the Australia A squad to join the group.

Earning inclusion for the first time, Emerging squad and A squad members NSW's Matthew Baus and Queensland's Sean Baker have been promoted and will be joined by NSW's Shane Garvey and South Australia's Wayne Ruediger, who have been rewarded for ongoing strong performances.

National coach, Steve Glasson believes this new line-up boasts world class ability that will see the team reach great heights.

"I'm pleased that the national selection panel has already completed its first crucial task for the year. With such a strong pool of athletes to choose from identifying 10 women and 10 men proved no easy feat.

"The new squads demonstrate a good combination of experience and youth, and the national coaches and selectors are excited about the coming year with one eye on the present and one eye on the much anticipated World Championships."

"We are extremely happy with the squad we have assembled and I congratulate the players and look forward to working with them," he said.

Those that have failed to retain their positions are Commonwealth Games gold and silver medallist, Wayne Turley, Hong Kong Classic bronze medallist, Terry Antram, and Australian Open singles and triples champion, Katrina Wright.

"Wayne, Terry and Katrina have been valuable members of the squad and it was a difficult decision to let them go. I wish to pay particular tribute to Wayne, who since joining the team in 2005 has been an integral member of the team and a successful and dynamic representative for Australia," Steve said.

The Australian Development/Under-25 and Australian Under-18 teams have also been named for the Trans Tasman event in New Zealand. National squad members Phillips, Boddington Baus and Pieterson will take part in this prestigious tournament in early March.

The national squad will be reviewed in late April after the Australian Sides Championships in Adelaide. At this time both the women's and men's teams will be reduced to eight members in preparation for the World Championships.
