Charlie (Brocket Hall) had birdies on the 4th, 15th and 18th and one bogey – on the 16th – in her round and is one shot clear of the field. Fellow international Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) is just three shots back on 72.
Holly, who won the U18 trophy at this event last year and is the English girls’ champion, birdied the third and 16th, but had three bogeys as she began her second nine.
After 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying the top 32 players will go forward to the matchplay stages. Three other members of the English Women’s Golf Association squad are currently on target to reach the knockout: Dorset’s Hayley Davis (Ferndown), scored 74, while former English champion Hannah Barwood (Knowle) and Suffolk’s Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry) shot 75.
However, EWGA’s other players need to move up the leaderboard tomorrow. They are: Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) 77; Alex Peters (Notts Ladies) 78; Nikki Foster (Pleasington) 79; Charlotte Wild (Mere) 82; Hannah Turland (Tidworth Garrison) 84.
Defending champion Leona Maguire of Ireland is well placed with a first round score of 72, while her twin, Lisa, returned 75.
