China's Wang & Xia capture women's gold at Asian Games

Fan Wang and Xinyi Xia of China captured the women's beach volleyball gold medal at the Asian Games here on Monday by defeating Miki Ishii/Megumi Murakami of Japan in the three-set finale.
 
 
 
It was the fourth-straight gold medal for the Chinese women as Xia returned to the top of the podium at the Asian Games for the second time as she and Yuanyuan Ma captured the 2014 title in Incheon, Korea, by defeating Thailand's Tanarattha Udomchavee/Varapatsorn Radarong in the final.
 
Wang, who won the bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games with Yuan Yue, and Xia posted a 2-1 (17-21, 21-19, 15) win in 54 minutes over Ishii and Murakami in the gold medal match at the Jakabaring Sport Center.

Previous Chinese winners of the women's gold medal were Jia Tian/Fei Wang in 2002 (Busan, Korea), and Chen Xue/Xi Zhang 2006 (Doha, Qatar) and 2010 (Guangzhou, China).  Thailand's Manatsanan Pangka/Rattanaporn Arlaisuk captured the inaugural women's beach volleyball title at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok.
 
Japan is now 0-3 in Asian Games' women's gold medal matches after placing second in 1998 (Yukiko Takahashi/Mika Saiki) and 2006 (Shinako Tanaka/Eiko Koizumi).  Overall, the Chinese women have now won nine medals in the beach volleyball competing at the Asian Games and Japan has claimed five podium placements.
 
To reach the Asian Games finale, Wang and Xia defeated Indonesians Juliana Dhita/Putu Utami 2-1 (21-10, 17-21, 15-9) while Ishii and Murakami posted a 2-0 win (23-21, 21-12) in 41 minutes over Irina Tsimbalova/Tatyana Mashkova of Kazakhstan.
 
In the women's bronze medal match, Dhita and Utami posted a 2-0 (21-11, 21-10) win in 30 minutes over Tsimbalova and Mashkova.

On the current FIVB World Tour rankings, Wang and Xi are listed 21st, Ishii/Murakami 29th, Dhita/Utami 77th and Tsimbalova/Mashkova 157th.
 
In men's beach volleyball medal matches on Tuesday, Qatar's Ahmed Tijan/Cherif Samba will play Ade Chandra Rachmawan/Mohammad Ashyifa of Indonesia for the title.
 
Tijan and Samba advanced to the finals by defeating China's Peng Gao/Yang Li (2-0 (21-18, 26-24) in 45 minutes while Chandra/Ashyifa bested compatriots Gilang Ramadan/Danangsyah Yudistira Pribadi 2-0 (21-13, 21-19) in 37 minutes to secure the gold medal berth. The men's final will be held on Tuesday.
 
While Qatar has secured its first men’s beach volleyball medal at the Asian Games with its best previous finish being a fifth by Tamer Abdelrasoul/Abdelaziz Khallouf in 2014 in Korea, Indonesia has captured four medals with two silvers (1998 and 2002) and two bronzes (1998 and 2006). Rachmawan placed fourth at the 2014 Asian Games with Koko Darkuncoro.
