England pair lead Scottish U16 championship

England’s Elizabeth Mallett (pictured)  and Bronte Law are at the top of a packed leaderboard after scoring two-under par 70 in the first round of the Scottish U16 open strokeplay championship at Strathmore.

Brogan Townend is in third place, one shot behind, and the other three members of the English Women’s Golf Association squad are all in the top ten, with one round to play.

Meanwhile, the two teams entered by EWGA are lying first and second in the Nations Cup competition.

“It’s an absolutely fantastic start,” said Pat Smillie, England’s national junior coach. “It’s good to see the girls playing so well early in the season.”

Bronte Law (Bramhall) hit 17 greens in regulation and, like English U15 champion Elizabeth Mallett (Sutton Coldfield Ladies), had four birdies in her round. Brogan Townend (Pleasington) played very steady golf with 15 pars, two birdies and one bogey.

Lauren Taylor (Woburn) shot one-over 73, while English U13 champion Georgia Hall (Ferndown) and Lancashire champion Emily Taylor (Royal Lytham & St Annes) returned scores of 74.

Leading team scores:
140 England A: Bronte Law, Elizabeth Mallett, Lauren Taylor.
145 England B: Georgia Hall, Emily Taylor, Brogan Townend.
150 Scotland.
