Up against hosts New Zealand at Eden Park, they were well placed at the interval after the bowlers combined brilliantly to bowl out Sophie Devine's side for 203, but ultimately it was left to final pair Charlie Dean and Anya Shrubsole to take their team over the line after a late collapse.
Earlier Kate Cross (3-35), Sophie Ecclestone (3-41) and Dean (2-36) had put Heather Knight's team in the ascendancy. Another improved performance in the field also featured a spectacular catch from Knight at cover.
In reply, England seemed comfortable at 106-3 and then 176-4 - with Nat Sciver the mainstay with 61 - but New Zealand so nearly stole it after a dramatic, late flurry of wickets.
England's next fixture is against Pakistan in Christchurch on Thursday.
