Fairytale finish for Jackaroos at Trans Tasman

Australia has enjoyed a fairytale finish at the Trans Tasman in Adelaide today, with a stranglehold on the final test's proceedings securing the host nation the women's title and the overall trophy.

The 34th edition of the annual encounter went right down to the wire, with the Jackaroos and Black Jack contingents locked at 2 tests a piece going into the final day's play.

In the women's event, the results could not have be any closer, with the first two tests split 8 matches all, and both teams sharing honours this morning.

The result looked set to be decided on shots count-back, until the women's triples team drew level with the Kiwis, 11-11, allowing world number four Kelsey Cottrell and reigning Golden Nugget winner Rebecca Quail to seal the nation's fate.

In a show of dominance, the Jackaroos pair produced one of the series most emphatic victories, at one point holding a game high 22 shot lead over world number three Val Smith and number one Jo Edwards, but eventually settling for a 24-8 win.

Claiming the women's title, after losing it last year in Invercargill, assured the Australia of the coveted overall victors trophy.

Since the inaugural Trans Tasman in 1979, Australia has held sway against New Zealand, claiming the men’s title on 19 of the 34 occasions, while its women have captured 10 of 16, including a draw.

The Jackaroos squad will now turn its attention firmly to the World Championships, to be staged at Lockleys and Holdfast Bay bowls clubs in Adelaide, from September 24 to December 9.
