A look at the top goalscorers in the WSL this season as we approach the halfway point
No player has scored more goals in the history of the Barclays Women’s Super League than Vivianne Miedema and the Arsenal striker could be on course for a golden boot ‘three-peat’ this season.
Her status as the league’s most deadly finisher had looked an inevitability for some time but the 24-year-old made it official when she overtook Nikita Parris's record in October last year.
The Dutchwoman has finished each of the last two seasons as top scorer with a ratio of more than a goal per game and has already raced to the top of the leaderboard again this time around.
Her 11 goals in ten games has helped the Gunners accumulate a staggering goal difference of +30 already. But defeats to Manchester United and Manchester City mean Joe Montemurro’s side aren’t quite as high up the table as they’d like to be.
The race for the title looks like it could go down to the wire, but will anyone stop Miedema from claiming a third successive golden boot?
Up until last weekend, it looked as though Arsenal and Netherlands team-mate Jill Roord might provide the closest competition with her seven goals from midfield.
However after scoring back-to-back hat-tricks in the opening two games of the season, the goals have dried up somewhat - her only strike since coming in the 3-0 win over Birmingham in December.
In reverse fashion Chelsea’s Fran Kirby has steadily returned to her very best form as the season has progressed and hammered four past former club Reading in her last outing to tie level with Roord on seven.
And it’s not just Kirby who’s been firing in the goals for Chelsea. A telepathic understanding between the England star and striker Sam Kerr has also yielded seven goals for the Australian too.
Another Aussie registering big numbers in the league this season is Arsenal’s Caitlin Foord who’s not only scored six for herself, but has laid on another five for her team-mates.
And Manchester United would not be top of the table without Leah Galton’s five goals.
Much of the talk around Casey Stoney’s side this season has been focused on Americans Christen Press and Tobin Heath but neither have managed to notch more than Galton so far this season.
Miedema and Roord next face a trip to Reading while Kirby and Kerr will have the more difficult task of closing the gap on leaders Manchester United.
