COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 6, 2007) -- Two beach volleyball teams are representing the United States at the first stop of the 2007 NORCECA (North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation) Beach Volleyball Circuit this weekend (April 6-8) in the Dominican Republic.
Paula Roca (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Alicia Polzin (Houston, Texas) will be representing the United States in the women’s competition while Hans Stolfus (Solon, Iowa) and Scott Wong (Pearl City, Hawaii) will take on the men’s bracket on the sands of Boca Chica.
“I think our teams have a very good chance of doing well in this event and the entire NORCECA Circuit,” said Ali Woods, USA Volleyball’s director of beach programs.
Teams from Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts & Nevis and Trinidad & Tobago have registered for the event, which is sponsored by PresidenteLight Beer.
The tournament purse is US$10,000, with $1,500 going to each of the winning teams. Several countries are also using the Dominican event to qualify teams for the Pan American Games in July in Rio de Janiero.
There are four more events on the NORCECA Circuit and U.S. teams are scheduled to compete in each:
April 16-22: Guatemala City, Guatemala
Women: Jenny Kropp (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Renee Cleary (Manhattan Beach, Calif.)
Men: Brad Torsone (Rochester, N.Y.) and Jon Thompson (Manhattan Beach, Calif.)
May 6: Culiacan, Mexico
Women: Jennifer Lombardi (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Julie Caldwell (Huntington Beach, Calif.)
Men: David Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Jack Quinn (Venice, Calif.)
May 18-20: Puerto Rico
Women: Jennifer Lombardi and Renee Cleary
Men: Art Barron (Ventura, Calif.) and Mike Szymanski (Upland, Calif.)
May 21-27: Trinidad & Tobago (Women Only)
Women: Kristin Ursillo (San Diego, Calif.) and Iwona Lodzik (Prospect Heights, Ill.)
