Shorr Reaches Goal with Junior Snowboarding World Bronze
VALMALENCO, Italy (April 3) – American Karly Shorr (Milford, MI) earned a spot on the FIS Snowboard Junior World Championship podium Sunday, landing bronze in the women's slopestyle snowboarding contest. It marked the third Junior Worlds medal for the U.S. in Valmalenco.
Having gained confidence after qualifying first in her heat on Saturday, Shorr came into Sunday's finals ready to throw down. She put forth a stellar performance despite unpredicted distractions. Accidentally leaving her pockets unzipped, Shorr was faced with flying Euros from her pockets passing through her line of vision as she went off the second jump. Unable to fully block out the loose change, Shorr lost track of her run opting to throw a straight air off the third jump, but still able to score high enough to take bronze.
"Making Junior Worlds has been my goal ever since last year," said Shorr. "Yesterday went really well, I qualified first in my heat. Today I just came in to do what I know I can do - put down a run. Then if it's good enough I'll be really happy and if not then I'll know I have to work harder."
Despite challenging training conditions, the riders brought their A game out as Hungary's Anna Gyarmati topped the women's podium. Finland's Merika Enne scored the silver ahead of Shorr.
"I'm so excited. It was my biggest goal," said Shorr of winning bronze at the Junior Championships. "It's definitely one of my biggest accomplishments. I'm really proud of myself."
Sunday's slopestyle contest concluded the 2011 FIS Snowboard Junior World Championships as well as the 2010-11 winter season.
