Stars light up the England's Women's Hockey League

A number of GB & England stars were on the score sheet in a busy Saturday in the Investec Women’s Premier Division. It was an especially good day for Reading as they enjoyed a huge win in their evening push back against Sutton Coldfield and saw their lead at the top extended to five points as second placed Olton lost earlier in the day. Reading maintained their 100% record in beating Sutton 9-2 with eight of their nine goals coming from open play including a four timer for international star Alex Danson. Sutton’s response both came from the ageless Jane Sixsmith, one of Danson’s predecessors in the international limelight.

Olton suffered their first defeat of the season in spectacular style going down 5-1 at home to Canterbury who move up to third just a point behind them on the back of this result. Canterbury’s goals included two for their new signing this season, Charlotte Craddock. Clifton enjoyed a useful 3-0 win over Slough whilst two penalty corners from Katie Long, the second with just three minutes to go, gave Leicester a 2-1 win over Midlands rivals Birmingham University. The win puts Leicester on 10 points along with Birmingham and Clifton. At the foot of the table there was an emphatic 4-0 win for Bowdon Hightown over Cannock to help the Cheshire side move out of the danger zone. Three of Bowdon’s goals came from Tina Cullen who has been scoring consistently in the league since its inception in 1989.

The top two in Investec Women’s Conference East, Surbiton and St Albans both drew and had to come from behind to earn a share of the spoils. Surbiton were held to a 2-2 draw by third placed Ipswich who lead 2-0 through first half goals from Chris McWhirter and Annika Broster and held it to 2-1 until the 68th minute when Vicky Heptonstall equalised. St Albans were more surprisingly held bottom of the table Horsham who had failed to pick up a point from their previous five games. Zeph Hardy gave Horsham the lead in the 9th minute and although Saints levelled things up with a 50th minute goal from Holly Parsons they couldn’t find the winner in the last 20 minutes. Elsewhere in the ornithological battle Harleston Magpies overcame Oxford Hawks 2-0, Chelmsford beat Maidstone by the same score line and Sevenoaks gained ground on the top three thanks to a 4-1 defeat of Old Loughtonians.

Only five points separate the top seven teams in Investec Women’s Conference North. Previous leaders University of Durham fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Brooklands Poynton with two goals in a minute from Harriet Moore and Libby Sheriff. Durham’s dropped points allow Bradford Wakefield to go top after they beat Springfields 7-1. Beeston go second after a 4-3 win over struggling Liverpool Sefton but left it late coming from 3-1 down and then clinched the points through a 70th minute corner from Jo Hunter. Two Laura Unsworth goals helped Loughborough University to a 4-0 win at Northampton Saints so they remain in the promotion mix whilst Saints stay rooted to the bottom of the table. A single Joss Plummer strike gave Whitley Bay & Tynemouth the points against Doncaster and mean they keep on the fringes of the title race.

Investec Women’s Conference West title holders Buckingham have reeled off six successive wins in their quest to regain the crown, the latest a 2-0 win at Barnes HE thanks to goals from Joelle Weston and Leanne Grimsley. They go six points clear of Swansea after the Welsh team beat Isca University 2-1 to go above them. New girls Gloucester City will be well pleased to sit in fourth place with their latest win a 4-1 defeat of Exe. Trojans move up from ninth to seventh after winning 3-1 at Firebrands and Staines come off the bottom thanks to Caroline Bausor’s goal against Team Bath Buccaneers. This result means that it is Bath who drop to the foot of the table.

There are no games this weekend with a number of young players from the league involved in the Futures Cup at Cannock, 27-30 October. Fixtures resume on 5 November.
