Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling's Dani King soloed to a stunning victory in last night's final round of the Matrix Fitness GP series, in the beautiful Georgian city of Bath. The Olympic Champion escaped the rest of the field in the early laps of the 45-minute race, then rode alone to finish on Royal Avenue well clear of the sprint for second place. Jessie Walker (RST Racing) sprinted to second, ahead of Charlene Joiner (Team WNT), with Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling's Great Britain Criterium Champion Eileen Roe fifth.
"I went after about ten minutes, so I was away for about 35 minutes on my own. It was always the plan to go for the solo win because, once I saw the course, I knew that how hard it was going to be.
"Obviously that was good for me because, if it's hard, it's hard for everyone," she added. "It was tough, but I just went into pursuit mode and went for it. It paid off, and it was really good!"
King's performance, against most of the top riders in the British domestic peloton, confirms that the 24-year-old has recovered from her horrific crash of last November, and is ready for her first big challenge of the season at next week's Women's Tour.
"I'm really pleased with my form," she said. "My training's been going well at the moment. Obviously it's really nice to win, to get some confidence in my form with the Women's Tour coming up. Obviously it was a crit, not a road race, but I had a few good results in Belgium and Holland in the last weeks; I guess with that, and the crit tonight, and just general training, it's looking good for me to be able to help the team to do the best we can in the Tour next week.
"I'm really looking forward to it!"
