Alice Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Ondine Achampong, Jennifer Gadirova and Jessica Gadirova have won the team silver medal at the European Championships in Munich. The gymnasts combined to score a total of 161.164 points to seal second place with Italy taking the gold. The result matches Britain best ever women’s European team placing.
Alice said after “This feels really special. As a team we’ve rally bonded this week and I think everyone can see that. We stuck together, we supported each other we had lots of fun and to win the silver medal is amazing. The atmosphere and the crowd was incredible, something a lot of us haven’t experienced before. I’m proud of the team for how we handled that and how we fought together throughout the competition.”
The British team competed in the same rotation as top qualifiers Italy and began their competition confidently on vault with all three gymnasts competing double twisting Yurchenko vaults. On bars recently crowned European all-around silver medal winner Alice Kinsella was the highlight scoring an impressive 14 to keep the team in second spot with Georgia-Mae Fenton adding 13.700.
On beam Ondine Achampong showed great character to open proceedings with a 13.700 with Alice again putting in a superb routine for 13.733. Ending on floor the Gadirova twins Jessica and Jennifer along with Alice wowed the crowd with their huge tumbling skills helping Great Britain to the final total of 161.164 and setting the team off with their TikTok famous dance moves to celebrate.
The women’s championship ends on Sunday with the individual apparatus for juniors and seniors. Competing for the senior titles are Jessica Gadirova who placed 2nd on vault in qualifying, with Alice Kinsella and Georgia-Mae Fenton set to compete in the bars final, Ondine Achampong in the beam final and Jennifer and Jessica Gadirova the floor.
