WOOLSTENCROFT LEADS CANADA’S SEARCH FOR PARA-ALPINE GLOBES IN 2007-08

CALGARY, AB (June 12th, 2007) – Para-Alpine Globe winners Lauren Woolstencroft (Vancouver,BC / Calgary, AB) and Chris Williamson (Markham, ON) will lead the largest team in Canadian Para-Alpine history, as a group of 24 high performance athletes have begun preparing for the 2007/08 ski season.

Alpine Canada Alpin today named a group of World Cup and high-potential development athletes to the CPAST training group that will participate in an extensive training regiment prior to the upcoming Para-Alpine World Cup season.

“This team has a good mix of veterans as well as young athletes who are going to push the veterans every step of the way as we pursue or goal of being the best in the world,“ said CPAST High Performance Director Jean-François Rapatel. “We are increasing our focus on a high level of fitness and we are going to continue to utilize resources available through our coaching staff and Performance Enhancement Team (PET) as we build on last season’s success.”

The summer training program includes on-snow training camp in Chile and Mt. Hood, USA as well as testing in Whistler and various other dryland camps throughout the summer.

The 2007-08 Para-Alpine World Cup season is scheduled to include races in Abtenau / Salzberg, AUT, Queras, FRA, Yong Pyong, KOR and Hackuba, Japan.

The CPAST team will also have returning Canadian champions Kathleen Forestell with guide Emily Glossop, Carly Grigg with guide Shannon Morley, Josh Dueck, Chantal Fowler, Morgan Perrin, Mathew Hallat, Arly Fogarty and Brad Lennea back for the coming season.

Karolina Wisniewska, a 2006 inductee in the Canadian Ski Museum Hall of Fame who earned the unique distinction of becoming the first Canadian alpine skiing athlete in either the Paralympic or Olympic Winter Games to win four medals at the 2002 Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, has also rejoined the team after being out of competition for the past three years. Wisniewska had a distinguished career while a member of Canada’s Para-alpine ski team from 1995 to 2004.

“The Para-alpine team has benefited from a significant increase in financial, human and technical resources in recent years allowing the Para-Alpine team to continually build as we work toward the goal of being a world leader by 2010,” said ACA Chief Executive Officer Ken Read.

Last season the Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team tied a best-ever performance by finishing fourth in the Nation’s Cup standings. CPAST athletes earned a total of 29 World Cup podiums, including 15 gold medals with Woolstencroft and Williamson, who are both Paralympic medalists, winning the overall Globes as well as Super G and Slalom discipline titles.
