Will 2020 US Open Continue Changing of the Guard in Women’s Tennis

Above all women’s tennis is in the midst of massive transition.  Serena Williams’ dynasty is over.  Williams remains a competitive top 10 quality player.  But her best days are behind her.  Now the betting on tennis question is who will take her place atop the game?  Concurrently its possible that there will not be any one person that does so.  Parity has become the name of the game in women’s tennis.  Specifically, it is that lack of a dominant player that makes women’s tennis so compelling.  No tournament has been more indicative of such equality as the US Open.

2020 Women’s US Open Tennis Championship Odds Overview

There is no greater example what actually goes into a sportsbook price than the 2020 US Women’s Open odds.  Serena Williams is chalk not because of current ability but because of past success.  To illuminate Williams remains the biggest “brand” in women’s tennis.  Not the best player, mind you, but the biggest name.  As a result, she still gets considerable betting action despite what actually is merited.  All told the US Open odds on the women’s side is indicative of great parity.  Let’s examine the top Women’s Tennis Association rated contenders.

Ashleigh Barty

First ranked on the WTA rankings is Ashleigh Barty. Barty has eight career titles and a career record of 252-94.  She has been ranked number one in the world since September 9, 2019.  Barty has one Grand Slam title in her career.  Last season she was the winner of the French Open.  At the 2020 Australian Open she was eliminated in the semifinal.  Barty hails from Australia.

Simona Halep

Second place in the WTA rankings belongs to Simona Halep.  Halep has 20 career titles with a record of 503-216.  She has won two Grand Slam titles and has been ranked as high as first.  In 2019 Halep won the Wimbledon championship.  Additionally, she was the champion of the 2018 French Open.  Halep has been ranked second in the world since February 2020.  She is from Romania.

Karolina Pliskova

Following Barty and Halep is third ranked Karolina Pliskova.  Her career record at best betting sites is 173-135 with five career titles.  Pliskova has never won a Grand Slam event.  Her best Grand Slam was a loss in the 2016 US Open Final.  Pliskova is the pride of the Czech Republic.

Sofia Kenin

Sofia Kenin of the United States is ranked fourth in the ATP.  Overall Kenin is 205-116 with five career titles.  In 2020 Kenin posted her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.  At a price of +1600 she offers potentially strong wagering value.  Especially compared to many of her competitors at more expensive prices.

Elina Svitolina

Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina is another potential bargain.  Cause by a record of 377-197 with 14 career titles are bettors shopping.  Of great concern is that Svitolina has never won a Grand Slam tournament.  But she did make the semifinal at Wimbledon and the US open last year.

Serena Williams

By reason of her 23 career Grand Slam titles does Serena Williams belong on the Mount Rushmore of women’s tennis.  The American has a career mark of 834-144 with 73 titles.  Even so the fact remains Williams hasn’t won a Grand Slam since 2017 at the Australian Open.
